VTT4 DAY FIVE:Alan, Quentin's y Sandwich de queso a la plancha

Ayer quede con Alan para comer. Fuimos al Buffet chino, a degustar platos de la cocina tradicional china como la pizza de Beijing, las patatas fritas de hunan o el delicioso "Carne de color rojo en palo". Era un buffet de estos de "ponte todo lo cerdo que quieras" asi que Alan se metio dos platos de "delicatessen variados" :p para beber se pidio una Tsing Tao, y me conto que no bebe otra cosa en los chinos desde que se la recomendo Alberto en nuestro ultimo viaje.

Por cierto, Alberto y Alvaro, todo el mundo me pregunta por vosotros que que tal os va y que si vais a volver :) Entre otros os saludan Beth, Bart, Alan, Sifu, Sonja y Abe.

Tras el fastuoso homenaje fuimos a Hot Topic a ver si habia camisetas frikis chulas. Pero no vi ninguna que mereciera la pena.. una lastima, con lo que solia molar esa tienda..

Por la tarde estuve un buen rato en la biblioteca leyendome el libro "Who took my money?", un libro de estos de autoayuda para aprender a manejar tu dinero de la serie de "Rich dad poor dad". Me esta molando bastante.

La clase de Andrew estuvo bien, estuve entrenando con el chico que trabajaba en Quentins, que, sorprendentemente sigue trabajando alli :p (para los que no os sepais la historia resulta que la ultima vez que estuvimos aqui pues salimos de fiesta al bar donde trabajaba el chico este de camarero, y, aparte de no dejarnos pagar ninguna bebida y tratarnos como si fuera el duenio del bar, parece ser que al final de la noche, yo ya no estaba, se pusieron a hacer chi sao borrachos en medio del bar. Baste decir que el pavo estaba tan borracho que se olvido que estaba trabajando y se fue a su casa Xd por cierto, Alvaro y Alberto, tambien os manda recuerdos :p)

Tras la clase estallo una tormenta de la ostia. Los truenos parecia que iban a romper las ventanas. Me fui a casa y Beth me preparo un sandwich a la plancha con sopa de tomate muy ricos :)

VTT4 DAY FOUR:Sol, pizza y SiuNimTao

Ayer era miercoles. Me levante bastante tarde asi que no tuve tiempo de hacer nada antes de la clase de la maniana. Estuve entrenando con Daniel y practicando el Wooden Dummy. Sifu se paso por clase y me estuvo dando algunos detalles del Jong.

Tras la clase hacia sol asi que me fui a dar un paseito agradable mientras escuchaba el Techari de ojos de brujo en mi ipod. Es una sensacion agradablemente extrania estar en estados unidos paseando al sol, pero con una banda sonora espaniola. Despues de ojos de brujo me puse a Camaron. Pude escuchar la cancion "Pueblos de la tierra mia" unas 30 veces seguidas.. De hecho me di cuenta que si fuera rico y tuviera infinitas vidas, me gustaria ser un cantaor flamenco y cantar en medio de la calle cuando hiciera sol.

Cuando me dio el hambre me fui al Airliner y me pedi una Chicago style Deep dish peperoni garlic pizza. Para los que no lo sepais, las pizzas Deep dish estilo chicago son unas pizzas gordisimas que mas bien parecen una kitch y que estan super jugosas y super cerdamente ricas. cuando me vino el cheque me di cuenta de una cosa:

Me interese por cuanto me estaban cobrando de impuestos por la pizza. Resulto que, aunque a mi me salia un 4,2% era un 5%.

Pensando sobre los impuestos me di cuenta por fin del truco que siempre me contaba el corrales, pero que yo no acababa de entender. Si yo tengo mi propia empresa, cuando hago la contabilidad tengo una entrada que es perdidas y ganancias, eso se resta y de eso tengo que pagar un % en impuestos.

Pues bien, si yo cojo el ticket este y lo paso como un gasto de mi empresa, entonces las ganancias de mi empresa disminuyen, con lo que pago menos impuestos. Es una idea simple, pero me ha costado 5 anios pillarla! :p

Me pregunto donde estara el limite entre lo aceptable y lo ilegal. Es decir, yo, sin casi ningun coste, podria montarme mi propia companyia con el unico fin de ahorrarme impuestos. Y me encargaria de tener siempre 0 beneficios para no tener que pagar ningun impuesto, ni los de la compania ni los mios.. curioso..

Por la tarde fui a la clase de Sisuk Brian, que me dio mazo de detalles sobre chi sao y como poder partirlo en trocitos digeribles para poder enseniar lo que mi cuerpo sabe hacer. La clase de Sifu estuvo bien, y acabo bastante tarde. Sifu me llevo a casa en coche y estuvimos hablando sobre detalles que quiero repasar en el seminario de este finde. Al llegar a casa Beth estaba viendo pretty woman, asi que mientras lo veiamos yo me puse a hacer los deberes que Sifu me habia mandado. Tras pretty woman me trague 7 dias y 7 noches.

VTT4 DAY THREE: Ana, Jessica and Homework

Mi amiga Ana, una chica de Valencia que conoci hace cuatro anios que tenia un novio iowano se va a casar. Me ha contado toda la historia hoy con un te de gengibre y una madalena de chocolate y platano.

Para hoy Sifu me ha mandado deberes. Ayer llame a Jeremiah para que viniera a entrenar conmigo, asi que hasta que llego he estado haciendolos. Aun me quedan 22 SNT por hacer y son las 11:07.. arg que suenio tengo. Aun asi supongo que los hare..

He quedado con Jessica para cenar y me ha llevado a un restaurante de comida americana, en plan fosters. Me ha contado como le gusta montar a caballo y como para pagarse las clases de monta, limpia el establo dos dias en semana. Tras la cena me ha traido a casa y ahora estoy con Beth y un colega suyo, que estan estudiando.

Hoy me he dado mi obligado paseo por la "iowa bookstore" en busca de libros de texto usados interesantes. Hasta hoy siempre me ha comprado libros de ordenadores, pero en esta ocasion me he comprado tres libros de finanzas:
-Fundamentals of Multinational Finance
-Fundamentals of Futures and Option Markets
-Financial Accounting for MBAs

Me esta llamando el mundo de las finanzas.. con el conocimiento adecuado se pueden hacer cosas muy guapas, como montar una empresa sin tener un duro o salir de la "rat race" y forrarse. Ademas para mi curro en el banco seguro que me sirve de algo..

Bueno, me voy a lavarme los dientes y hacer esos SiuNimTaos...

VTT4 DAY TWO: Lluvia, libros y kung fu

Hoy no ha hecho nada bueno.. asi que he tardado en salir de casa. Me levante a las 9 y hubiera ido a entrenar directamente, pero como llovia me quede en casa esperando que escampara leyendo un libro que me compre en el aeropuerto de Chicago:"Rich dad, Poor dad" Un libro que recomiendo a todo el mundo sobre como escapar de la trampa del trabajar para sobrevivir y hacerse rico. el truco consiste en tener activos y no tener pasivos. (Assets and Lyabilities)

Como no escampaba me tuve que ir caminando bajo la lluvia para llegar a la clase de las 11, donde solo vino Sisuk James. Estuvimos entrenando hasta las 13:30 y luego nos fuimos a comer a un chino.

Trass la comida fui a hacerle una visita a Sifu al curro. Nos alegramos de vernos y estuvimos hablando de todo un poco. Entre otras cosas me ha dicho que me va a dar un entrenamiento especial para que haga cuando no este en clase.. (ha dejado caer que puede que aborrezca el SiuNimTao despues de esta semana..:p). Me he comprado otro libro y un paraguas y he ido a la escuela a entrenar en la clase de Sifu Brian.

La clase de Brian me ha gustado, especialmente me ha dado un detalle importante para gente bajita que entrene kung fu. Lo contrastare con Sifu a ver que opina antes de contarselo a la gente de Madrid..

Ahora estoy en la escuela, dentro de 15 minutos empezara la clase de Sifu, y durara de 19:00 a 21:00 como poco (aunque probablemente mas..) Antes de que llegue la gente a ver si me da tiempo a hacer un par de veces el Jong..

VTT4 DAY ONE: Ron Rivest, Sol y lapices de colores

Hace un dia cojonudo.
Me he ido con Beth a desayunar a "Prairie Lights" y, estando en la cola para pedirme una madalena y un cinnamon tea, detras nuestro se ha puesto Douglas Jones, el que fue mi profesor de "Advanced Operating Systems" aparte de tutor durante mi estancia en Iowa city hace cuatro anios. Este tio, gracias al cual, en su epoca recibi un mail personal de Dennis Ritchie, desde las elecciones "de resultados sospechosos" en las que gano George Bush Jr. inicio un proyecto de investigacion para crear un sistema de votacion electronica seguro.
Cuando estudie con el me invito a apuntarme a sus clases de esta asignatura, pero no pude por temas academicos. El caso es que le salude en la cola y le recorde quien era y la anecdota con Dennis Ritchie y empezamos a hablar..

Resulta que el proyecto este pues es bastante gordo claro, involucrando a la universidad de Iowa con fundacion estatal, y el tio ha estado dando charlas por ahi y tal.. Bueno, pues me dijo que el otro dia habia estado comiendo con Ron Rivest (asi de memoria y con posibilidad de equivocarme creo que Ron Rivest fue el creador del RSA un protocolo de encriptacion sesgura muy utilizado hoy dia) que esta involucrado en su proyecto.

Le conte la broma que nos gastaba el de criptografia respecto de Ron Rivest y el Ron Rives y se rio y dijo que se la contaria :p

Despues de dejar a Beth estudiando me fui a dar una vuelta al sol, sentarme en el parque y disfrutar del calorcito :D Antes de comer me fui a la escuela a entrenar un ratillo con el jong.

Me he comprado unos lapices de colores tipo plastidecor en una tienda de arte para pintar en mi moleskine :D

VTT4 DAY ONE:De vuelta en Iowa City

Ya estoy aqui. Ayer casi me dejan tirado en chicago porque el vuelo a Cedar Rapids estaba lleno. Me pusieron en una lista de espera y tuve suerte de estar el primero. Me vino a buscar Bart y sali de fiesta con Beth.

El mundo esta cada vez mas conectado

Acabo de llegar de fiesta con mis colegas. Hemos ido a tomar unas cervezas por Madrid. Hoy salgo por Madrid con Jairo y Dani, y mañana saldré por Iowa City con Beth y Bart.. Yo soy el mismo, sin embargo estoy en dos entornos totalmente distintos, conectandolos..

Entrepreneurial Proverbs

I gave a talk at ETech on Monday called "Entrepreneuring for Geeks." I've given this general talk a few times now -- how can the more technically minded among us move into making companies of our own? I really enjoy the talks because I really enjoy entrepreneurs; at least, I enjoy the ones who are really excited about making something fantastic through their efforts. "Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to change the world?" Right.

I started out this year's talk with a set of "proverbs" I've collected or thought up over the years. I liked the format of a Go book I recently read, called (not surprisingly!) "Proverbs," and decided to adopt it for the talk. These are basically little nuggets of wisdom for bite-sized nutrition. Enjoy.
Starting

* It's good to be king -- being an entrepreneur is the best job I've had. Every day your job is new and different; you constantly have to push yourself in new directions. You no longer have to say, "Well, I'm just an engineer, but..." -- you have a great excuse to take an interest in everything. Working in an environment you shaped to your own beliefs about how a company should be run is incredible (and humbling!). And of course there are sometimes financial rewards, although it's still a great job regardless.
* Losing sucks -- shutting down a company is unbelievably difficult. It affects your home life, your health, your job prospects, your financial stability. Professional investors are grown-ups, but it's still extremely disheartening to lose the money people invested based on belief in you. If your backers include friends or family, it's extremely difficult to have to tell them the company is closing and their money is gone. Most entrepreneurs fail several times before succeeding, too, so losing is both terrible and nearly inevitable. Fight as hard as you can against it.
* Building to flip is building to flop -- this is taken from Jason Fried, and he's right. People who start out with only one goal, to sell to a big portal, will find their options are too limited. Plan as many paths to success as possible for your company, and always have a Plan B when acquisition (or whatever path you choose first) doesn't work.
* Prudence becomes procrastination -- it's great to research your market and talk to potential buyers about your ideas. It's terrible to let an excess of this become a impediment to getting started. Too much prudence edges away from research and into procrastination.
* Momentum builds on itself -- just start. Do whatever you can. Draw a user interface. Write a spec. Make something, anything, that people can see and touch and try. A prototype is worth ten thousand words. One you start moving, you will find that people start to carry you along.
* Jump when you are more excited than afraid -- lack of fear is irrational, and too much fear is debilitating. Make the jump into your business when you have considered the fear, and come out more excited than afraid.

The Idea

* Pay attention to the idea that won't leave you alone -- this is taken from Paul Hawken's Growing a Business. Sometimes an idea catches hold of you and you find you can't put it down. Pay attention to that! Just start working on it. Can't get yourself to do anything on it? Move on. Find yourself waking up out of bed to write down new ideas about it? That's a good one to choose.
* If you keep your secrets from the market, the market will keep its secrets from you -- entrepreneurs too often worry about keeping their brilliant secrets locked away; we should all worry much more about springing a surprise on a disinterested market (anyone remember the Segway?). To quote Howard Aiken: "Don't worry about people stealing an idea. If it's original, you will have to ram it down their throats."
* Immediate yes is immediate no -- does everyone immediately tell you your idea is great? Run away from it. If the idea is that obvious, the market will be filled with competitors, and you'll find yourself scrambling. One good test: when the New York Times Magazine puts out its annual "Year in Ideas" issue, is your idea in it? Then don't do it. You're already too late.
* Build what you know -- this is the most basic advice of idea generation: scratch an itch you have yourself. To make a great company, stop and ensure that your need is broadly felt, and that your solution is broadly applicable -- not everyone spends their life in front of a computer, remember.
* Give people what they need, not what they say they need -- interviews are tricky. People will swear up and down that they would buy a product you describe if only it were available, and then fail to do so as soon as it is. Likewise, in conversation an idea can sound terrible, but in actualization the idea can become a compelling product. You have to sherlock out the truth of the interest people express, and "yes/no" questions are usually less useful than "how much" or "how bad" questions.
* Your ideas will get better the more you know about business -- engineers hate to hear this, but you can generalize up quite far from here: the more you know about everything, the better all of your ideas will get! If you want to start a business and your strength is in development, learning about pricing, sales, marketing, finance, and yes, even HR, all of it will make your product ideas stronger and better.

People

* Three is fine; two, divine -- having too many co-founders makes decisions hard to reach; if you're on your own, you have to bear all of the stress and worry about the success of the company. In my judgment, three people can do well together, but having two founders is best.
* Work only with people you like and believe in -- I once heard Eric Schmidt say something along the lines of, "The older I get, the more I think all that matters is working with people you like." If you're smart and talented, you're probably going to like a lot of smart and talented people. Working with people you like is so much more fun, and often more productive, than fighting against someone who may be smart and talented but just isn't a great fit for you.
* Work with people who like and believe in you, just naturally -- maybe you are very persuasive, and can talk people into working with you against their better instincts. Especially for co-founders and early employees, don't try that hard. Find the people that naturally want to work with you, and nudge them into the roles where you need them. You'll have more fun and get more done.
* Great things are made by people who share a passion, not by those who have been talked into one -- a corollary of the last; you can spark a passion in someone, but you can't do it without some fuel to catch. Better to wait, and find the person who is already inclined to believe in your cause. You may talk someone into co-founding a company with you, but will they stick with it through ups and downs if they had to be persuaded that hard?

Product

* Cool ideas are useless without great needs -- this is the classic engineers' entrepreneurial mistake (or at least I'd like to think so, since I've made it). Techies love tech, and a new technology can produce a lot of companies that don't really meet a need. Better to start with the need, and then see how what you know can produce a better answer to that need. (Marketers tend to have the opposite problem: real, pressing needs with completely unworkable solutions.)
* Build the simplest thing possible -- engineers have the hardest time with this, with not overdesigning for the need they're addressing. Make the simplest possible product that makes a significant dent in that need, and you'll do far better than you would addressing two or three needs at once. Simplicity leads to clarity in everything you do.
* Solve problems, not potential problems -- you can waste a lot of money implementing solutions for problems you don't have yet, and may never have. Work on the biggest, most pressing problems today, and put aside everything else.
* Test everything with real people -- it's unbelievable how helpful this is. Go find civilians, real people who use computers because they have to and not because they love to. Find them in Starbucks, or at the library, or in a college computer lab. Give them $20 for 20 minutes, and you'll be paid back a hundred times over.

Money

* Start with nothing, and have nothing for as long as possible -- small budgets give big focus (probably another line I'm stealing from Jason Fried: it sounds like something he'd say...) Don't go out and raise a ton of money right away. Instead, give yourself just enough to get going, and use the limits that imposes to motivate yourself.
* The best investor pitches are plainspoken and entertaining (not in that order) -- think about what this implies. A plainspoken pitch is the surface of a very solid business. If you have to fudge and lie to get investors interested, why is that? If you're running a great business, it is not hard at all to lure investors into it; the worse your business, the bigger (and more odious) your fundraising task is. Entertaining implies a fun person to work with, and VCs like working with people they like as much as the rest of us do. If you don't bring the funny, bring the person who brings the funny.
* Never let on that you're keeping a secret -- telling an investor "I don't want to talk about that" is terrible. It's the natural converse of being plainspoken. It's good to be aware, though, that some potential investors will listen to you and then share your information with your direct comptitors, and not always because they're invested in those comptetitors. Knowing that, you have to keep some secrets -- but be as diplomatic about that as possible. Respond to the idea behind the question, without giving away more than you feel comfortable discussing. Learn to steer the conversation in the way you want it to go. And then give up more information as you become more comfortable with the potential investor.
* No means maybe and yes means maybe -- you should never take a "no" from someone you want to work with. Accept the no, ask for feedback, and then just keep sending them updates on how much butt you're kicking in the market. During one company, three of the five term sheets I collected came from VC firms that told me "no" originally. Conversely, though, the only money in the bank is actual money actually in the bank. Everything else is just a possibility, and you have to treat it as such. Don't stop fundraising until you have a firm commitment for the funding you need, and don't accept halfway promises like, "We'll fund you if another firm comes in." Keep on driving until the wire transfer is complete.
* For investors, the product is nothing -- the classic engineer's VC pitch has ten slides about the product and two about the academic achievements of the founders. That's a terrible pitch. One slide should be about the product, while the rest cover the market, competitors, financials, funding history, and the relevant experience of the team. The product matters far less to most investors than the reactions of customers, the properties of the market, and the credibility of the team. Obsess about the product on your own time; present your business in all of its parts.
* The best way to get investment is not to need it* -- if you have a running business with real customers and you're paying all your bills, you are much more likely to get a funding round than if you need the round in order to survive or succeed. The pitch that goes, "We could accelerate our growth with more money" is much more compelling than, "I need your money or our doors will close."

I´m a bit skeptik about the following article found in ananova.com:

All 72 pupils of the Veena Vadini School at Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh use both their hands “with equal ease”, reports Asian News International.

"Not just that, these children can use both their hands to write in two different languages on two different subjects at the same time."

If that where true it would mean that they can play in their heads two conversations at a time, or think about two subjects at a time.. doubtful..

At most I´d say they can write with both hands and can swap their attention many times very quickly between what they are writing with one hand and the other..

Students create plant that glows when thirsty

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Some people like to talk to their plants. Now, students at Singapore Polytechnic say they have created a plant that can communicate with people -- by glowing when it needs water.

The students said on Tuesday that they have genetically modified a plant using a green fluorescent marker gene from jellyfish, so that it "lights up" when it is stressed as a result of dehydration.

The light is hard to detect with the naked eye but can be seen using an optical sensor developed in collaboration with students at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University.

The development of such plants could help farmers to develop more efficient irrigation of crops.

Virus para Móviles

Kaspersky Lab ha comunicado la existencia de un virus (Trojan-SMS.J2ME.RedBrowser) que afecta a móviles compatibles con Java. El mismo puede cambiar el sistema de tarifación del teléfono e infectar a los conocidos smartphones.

Que guapo! el tener telefonos moviles que se colgaban fue un adelanto, pero lo de los virus le da un toque mucho mas molon al tema.. Recuerdo cuando, camino de la galizia party años ha, Tatus comentaba como molaría que existiera un software que te buscara en una base de datos de pelis lo que tu quisieras, en plan, quiero ver una peli en la que aparezca una Desert eagle .50, una bicicleta y jackie chan.. y que el te la encuentre..

retrievr es otro soft parecido que te permite hacer un dibujo y te busca fotos en flickr que se parezcan a lo que has dibujado..

Peering into the future

Que el futuro está online es algo que yo imagino con todas mis ansias desde que me conecté a internet via modem por primera vez. Hoy dia con el crecimiento de la libertad de expresion individual gracias a los blogs esto se va viendo cada vez mas claro. En este documento, Robert X. Cringely explica como el peer to peer es el camino para evitar el obstaculo técnico del ancho de banda como cuello de botella.
Si ponemos un capitulo de un programa de television y todo el mundo se lo quiere bajar, no hay ancho de banda que soporte esto. Sin embargo si en vez de colgarlo de un servidor este fichero se va distribuyendo y puedes bajarte trocitos de distintas personas la cosa mejora. Esto no es nuevo claro, todos los usuarios de emule, bittorrent, kazaa etc lo hacen a diario.
Cringely propone una infraestructura tecnica y legal mediante la cual el cliente pague una cantidad pequeña ($1.5-$3.00) por el capítulo y reciba (mediante paypal) una compensación económica por cada bit que otra persona se baja de él. También comenta como webs de fans de algo podrán promover que la gente se baje esos capítulos y también ganar dinero ellos.

one laptop per child

Mirando el blog de Martin Varsavsky veo que el proyecto "one laptop per child" ya tiene diseñadores.

En su cuenta de flickr ha puesto la siguiente foto de los modelos

El caso es que hecho en falta lo que me pareció verdaderamente revolucionario del invento: la carraca que servía para recargar la batería de forma manual (en la siguiente foto del modelo inicial se ve).

Le he preguntado a Martin a ver que ha sido de este detalle, esperemos que me conteste..

Actualizacion: Me ha contestado Martin diciendome que el recargador de bateria manual si que está solo que lo han cambiado de una carraca a un hilo del que tiras. Y que estiman que pueden conseguir un ratio de recarga de 10 a 1, es decir, recargar 10 minutos de bateria por cada minuto que le des a mano.

Desde pequeño soy muy preguntón. La gente que me conoce puede dar fe de ello..
Yo pregunto ilusionado con obtener una respuesta que me ayude a resolver mi problema. Que resuelva mi conflicto.

Ultimamente me doy cuenta de que es posible que no haya respuesta a mis preguntas. Que nadie lo sepa. Que todo esté mal planteado y simplemente funcione por inercia y por miedo.

Me doy cuenta de que la gente adulta tampoco sabe por que hace las cosas. O bién que las razones que les llevan a hacer lo que hacen se apoyan en axiomas que se me hacen artificiales.

No hay un manual. Nadie sabe nada.

Y sin embargo todo parece funcionar bien. La gente vive, tiene hijos, lucha y se esfuerza en ser feliz. Todos tenemos momentos de felicidad. Puede que eso sea todo.

Mira hacia adelante 100 años. Estas en tu lecho de muerte. Que has hecho con tu vida? Has vivido bien? Existe tal cosa como vivir correctamente?

Tu no desde luego..
Mira un poco mas cerca, 5 años. Tienes una amiga especial, que te reconforta cuando estas triste. Que te alegra de vez en cuando queriendote. Sois novios desde hace tiempo y vivis juntos. Pero tu tienes tus aficiones, tienes tus amigos, tienes mil cosas que hacer, y pasar el tiempo muerto en su compañia es algo que no te atrae.. a ella esto le entristece porque lo que le gusta es ver la tele a tu lado.. La sociedad te dice que te cases.. que cierres los ojos para siempre, Que haces? Renuncias al mundo y a ti mismo?

Busca un espejo y mirate en el. Quien eres? Que quieres hacer con el tiempo que te han regalado de vida?

Por favor, si alguien ahi fuera ha dado con la respuesta a alguna de mis preguntas que me diga algo..
